Get your data inside MSCI’s indexes and analytics.

The MSCI × BattleFin Data Competition is open to alternative data vendors. MSCI is looking for datasets it can build into new indexes, factors and risk signals, and list in front of its institutional clients.

Launched at BattleFin Connect: AI & Data, New York

Who your data would reach

MSCI’s clients span asset managers, asset owners, banks, hedge funds, insurers, wealth managers and corporates.

98of the top 100 asset managers
94of the top 100 pension funds
82of the top 100 banks

$21 trillion in assets is benchmarked to MSCI indexes, and MSCI’s risk analytics compute more than 5.9 billion positions a week on average.

Three ways your data can show up in MSCI products

Index

New thematic and custom indexes, tracked by ETFs and structured products.

Analytics

New factors, signals and risk insights inside Barra and MSCI’s portfolio tools.

Data Marketplace

Your dataset listed alongside MSCI’s own data and insights, in front of its institutional clients.

How you’d earn from it

Depending on the product and how your data is used, partnerships can follow one or more of these models.

Direct data subscription

MSCI licenses your dataset for a recurring fee.

Full partnership, with two recurring revenue streams

A share of index licensing fees, based on ETF assets and/or structured-product notional, plus a share of Barra revenue or a data license for analytics. The analytics share may be performance-based on incremental revenue.

Additional client license fees

From banks, asset managers and asset owners using the resulting data and products.

Commercial models are non-contractual, may vary by product, client type, usage and volume, and are subject to a signed agreement with MSCI.

Any analytics-related arrangement would preserve MSCI’s existing Barra economics, commercial independence and unrestricted ability to serve its global institutional client base.

Competition themes, ranked by MSCI’s priority

Datasets in any of these areas are eligible. Those closest to the top of the list are MSCI’s biggest focus.

  1. Supply chain and physical-world resilience

Supply chain, shipping and freight, transport, geospatial

  2. Semantic content and sentiment

Earnings transcripts, sell-side research, news, social media

  3. Macro and economic data

    Economic indicators, consumer spending, inflation

  4. Flow and fund transparency

Retail, fund, asset and hedge fund flows as leading signals

  5. Company and private-company data

Company descriptions, product catalogs, private-company fundamentals

What MSCI will assess

Every submission is reviewed against six criteria.

Coverage
Ideally 90% of cumulative issuer market cap, measured against the MSCI ACWI IMI.
Accuracy and completeness
Validated against reference sources, with minimal gaps.
Timeliness
Reliable delivery, with a lag that fits index rebalancing.
History and corporate events
A long point-in-time history that accounts for mergers, spin-offs and identifier changes.
Governance
A rules-based, transparent and auditable data methodology.
No restrictions
No existing restriction on creating and selling financial products built on the dataset.

Subject to MSCI review. Every partnership depends on MSCI’s Research and Data teams confirming the scope, quality and transferability of the data you can share.
